We’re ready for the Olympic Games
“The Games of the 29th Olympic in 2008 are awarded to the city of - Beijing!” when I heard Mr. Juan Antonio Samaranch announced it seven years ago, which has probably been ever the most euphonious sentence I’ve ever learnt, I was in the auditorium of my university crowded with all my schoolmates, bursts of thunderous applauses, faces with exalted expressions, everyone was cheered by the exciting news. No words could explain my excitement on Olympic Games. It seems that the excitement still remains in our mind, the torch relay has been on the way, Chinese mountaineers carried the Olympic flame to the peak of the world's highest mountain, Mount Qomolangma, fulfilling the promise Beijing made in its Olympic bid. Yes, we’re ready for the Olympic Games.
People all over the world are now paying much more attention to China. It is certainly believed that the twenty-first century is China’s century. Why do they focus on China? This is largely due to the growth and the development of China, I think, - not only the rise of economy, but also the culture, the diplomacy, even the sports. China is never becoming so eye-catching. We have been working hard for the great events.
The fact that Beijing has been awarded the right to host the 2008 Olympic Games shows the world’s recognition and trust of Beijing. Beijing has proposed, in harmony with the Olympic spirit, the concepts of Green Olympics, High-tech Olympics and People's Olympics. Beijing with the other six co-host cities have been applying itself to environmental protection in every field by launching various projects to improve the city’s ecological environment, with a view to considerably raising the environmental quality of the capital so as to eventually turn it into ecology-friendly cities. And at the same time, the Beijing Olympics in 2008, intended as a show-window for displaying high-tech achievements and innovation progress, will enhance Beijing’s capacity of technical innovation, and promote the industrialization of high-tech fruits and their wide application in people’s daily lives. It also will be a gala gathering featuring a culture-oriented massive sport event. It will extensively incarnate the Olympic spirit, disseminate the brilliant Chinese culture, and enhance the understanding, trust and friendship among the peoples all over the world.
On the recent May Day holidays, I took a 2-day tour to one of the co-host cities of the 29th Beijing Olympic Games – Qingdao, where the sailing competition will be held. I was shocked at what I saw compared with seven years ago. I could hardly describe the city when I was wandering in it. It’s a totally brand-new city now! The city, the people, the air, the sea, of all what I saw impressed me a lot. It seems that everyone in the city is expecting the great Olympic events sincerely. Everyone is doing what they should do to make their own contribution to the city, to the country, to the Olympics. And good news is following successionally, I received the mascots of Olympics- five Fuwa which were from my nephew, a Grade-5 primary pupil in Beijing. I was so happy to get the gift. Everyone in China now has passion to do something to help the coming Olympic Games.
The powerfulness of China will promote the world peace and development. And I think the 29th Beijing Olympic Games is the best proof of this. We are confident to present an unprecedented successful event in the history of the Olympic Games. We are ready! |
